Background of the Study: Chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases, affect a significant portion of the population in Nigeria, and they often have a profound impact on mental health. Patients with chronic illnesses are at a higher risk of developing anxiety and depression due to the long-term nature of their conditions, the limitations on their daily lives, and the financial and emotional burden of managing their illnesses (Adebowale et al., 2023). Anxiety and depression among chronic illness patients can worsen their physical health outcomes, impair medication adherence, and reduce their overall quality of life (Onuoha et al., 2024).
Nurses play a critical role in managing anxiety and depression in patients with chronic illnesses, as they are often the primary healthcare providers who establish continuous relationships with patients. Through therapeutic communication, mental health assessments, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals, nurses can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression (Akinmoladun et al., 2024). However, there is limited research specifically focusing on the role of nurses in managing mental health issues in patients with chronic illnesses in Sokoto State hospitals. This study aims to investigate the role of nurses in managing anxiety and depression in this context.
Statement of the Problem: Patients with chronic illnesses in Sokoto State hospitals often experience mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, which complicate their treatment and recovery. Despite the importance of mental health in chronic disease management, nurses may not be fully trained or equipped to address these issues. There is a need to investigate the extent to which nurses in Sokoto State hospitals are involved in managing anxiety and depression among chronic illness patients, as well as the challenges they face in providing adequate care.
